I thought this was appropiate thread as it has recently happened
to me, idea behind it, is to show others what CAN or COULD
happen in a situation and you are not too sure what to do.
I have been getting some work done at my house, I asked the guy
I dealt with if he wanted any money upfront, you know for materials
etc, he replied no, pay when job is done and your happy with it,
I said ok what I will do is pay you a portion of it once I see it's a good
job and the balance when it has finished, he agreed to this.
I have been really pleased with their work so much so yesterday I got
a large some of money to pay him on account, the guy did not know
this, my intention was to give it him this morning when he arrived.
However, when I got home last night someone was at my doorstep
talking to my husband, as far as my husband knew he was one of the
workmen, when the workmen arrive in the mornings my husband
has already left for work, so obviously does not know what they look
like, he only knows the guy who we have been dealing with.
Anyhow, I parks my car, goes up to this person talking to my husband,
and was going on about how well the lads have done, and what the
plans were for tomorrow etc etc, then the PUNCHLINE question came,
he asked me for some payment to pay the lads, now when I left for work
yesterday I briefly spoke to the workers and the brickie was his first day
on the job, when the guy asked for some money, stupidly I was about to
give it him, then strange thing happened I thought back to the morning
and said to myself that brickie did NOT have a strong irish accent.
So i said sure you can have some, when I have spoken to the guy his name
being Tony who I dealt with first, I gets my mobile phone starts calling Tony
the guy on my doorstep said what ya doing so I said i'm not giving anyone
anything until I have spoken with Tony, he said he's in the van, I said
well get him here. Sadly Tony's mobile was switched off lol, so I pretended
it wasn't and really having a conversation with myself, then the guy
said ok I will get him he's in the van but he told me to collect payment, I
again said, nope your not getting anything until I spoke with Tony,
then he toddles off muttering to himself lol and never returned.
Eventually I managed to get through to Tony who said that he hadn't asked
anyone to collect payment, which I already knew.
It kind of un-nerved me cause obviously my house was being watched, last night
I was on tenterhooks, kept checking through the windows to make sure he
hadn't come back knowing I had cash in the house. Thankfully no harm was done
but I dred to think if it was my husband who had the cash I know he would have
paid him.
Moral of this story is...... NEVER pay anyone anything, unless it's the guy
with whom you are dealing with.. Sad as it is, there are nasty people out
there who will stoop to anything to scam money out of people your hard
earned money at that.
If you have been in a similar situation, please tell us about it. You could
even help someone who may have read your post and thought about things
before getting scammed.
