Ok...you have got me interested...

Why do you believe that this is the greatest book ever written? Is it because you feel it expounds a vision of society that resonates with your own world view? Perhaps you feel it is a masterpiece for its use of language, imagery and other literary devices? Maybe you feel it made a positive impact on mankind and has influenced the world with a set of fresh, radical and progressive ideas?

OR...heaven forbid....is this some immature attention seeking device saying 'Look at me, I am willing to say things that others do not' ??? Because if that is the case...there are reasons why others do not : ) Any one of us can identify a host of sensitive issues and open them to a public forum with no regard for other people's feelings. The reason why we don't do it is quite simple. It doesn't make us appear clever, it doesn't suggest that we are in any way promoting any kind of intelligent debate and most of all we don't think it's funny.

BUT...if you truly believe that this is a book that everyone should read and live by, then I am willing to discuss it. For the record, yes I have read it.

I am sitting here looking at Simon like I do with my students when they feel the urge to provoke me with a stupid, non-conformist, revolting statement (not original though). I know he doesn't believe what he said; I even doubt he deserves an answer, because his intention is not to have a debate (what debate can create a book that is written by a self-educated man, a book full of absurd incoherent ideas, a book that wasn't even written by the author but dictated - and see? I don't mention the content of the book nor the intentions, because if I do that I would ask the administrator of this site to take off the picture that illustrates Simon's choice of book as being insulting for my almost 40 years of reading and respect of culture and writers).
So, what to do? To tell him he is wrong? He knows that. To tell him its insulting? He wants to insult. Therefor, I try to understand WHY an intelligent man, bright in so many aspects, decided to do such a common, teenagers like, act of "rebellion". Bored? Maybe. But more than that its his fear that he isn't interesting enough if he shows less provocation; this post is about a young man yelling in his way: "I hate to be a well-raised person, I feel like I live in a prison, I need to show you all that I have the courage of saying whatever is considered "wrong" because its the only way I can go on of being in my real life the person the society wants me to be." But this young man I try to understand can be so immature that he forgot he can step with dirty shoes on the friendship on line people (also real people) showed him.
